According to estimates gathered from a number of studies, you can expect to burn around 270 calories every 30 minutes when exercising with a weighted hula hoop.
The study came from the American Council on Exercise (ACE) back in 2010. It analysed women between the ages of 16 and 59 during a 30-minute hooping workout which included a variety of different hooping exercise and moves (like you saw above).
Results concluded that around 7 calories a minute (210 in 30 minutes) are burned using a normal hula hoop. As weighted hula hoops required more effort and energy to conduct the same 30-minute routine, it can be estimated you’ll use around 30% more energy, and therefore burn 30% more calories during your exercise.

There are a few different opinions on how heavy your weighted hula hoop should be, but the only one that matters…is yours! Generally speaking, weighted hoops start at around 2-3 lbs and go up to 5 lbs.
Overall, most people seem to prefer hoops around the 2-3 lb mark, with only the most-advanced hoopers upping their weight to 5 lbs.
All in all, a weighted hula hoop is an amazing way to get in your daily exercise. It burns plenty of calories, improves your mental state, tones your core, and slims down your waist.
